Just an Update!

Here is a new full tank shot, I am very happy with how all the plants have filled in. I really think this is probably the fullest it has ever been and this is after a pretty drastic pruning. There are a few things I still want to change. I want to swap out some of the really fast growing plants for some slower growing. Other than that just upgrading some of the component as far as the hardware is concerned and then it will be really done. Here is one of my new fish. He is a Checkerboard Cichlid. He is one of the most peculiar fish in the aquarium just by the way he swims and his feeding habits. He is alot of fun to watch.

  1. It's really beautiful! The plants are gorgeous! I can tell you've put a lot of work into it.

I had always heard not to mix cichlids with other fish. I think the reasoning is that cichlids are more aggressive than most other freshwater fish. But in your tank there are so many places for the other fish to hide, it may not end up being a problem.

  2. These guys don't get much larger than you see there 2-2.5" and they are very docile. I intentionally only got one because if they breed they get very aggressive. While in general that is a pretty good rule of thumb, I have seen many tanks where people are keeping fish together that completely don't follow the set rules. Great example a school of cardinals with angel fish. Or Rams with cardinals. I think in general the stores give you guidelines as to which families of fish you can mix together, but there are exceptions to the rule regarding specific species. i.e. oscars belong to the cichlid family and I would never put one in my tank as he would eat all of the fish I have for a snack. However the checkerboard gets along with all of his tank mates.

  3. It looks amazing Mike! You have soooo much more patience than I would ever have for that sort of thing! I applaud you for that. I can't wait to come over and enjoy the peaceful sounds of it once again (assuming I don't get distracted and start taking pictures, of course :)
